Tips For Seniors Selling Their Oregon Home
By Teresa Greenhill
You’ve been living in that home for decades. Maybe your kids even grew up there. But now that you’ve retired and entered your senior years, you’re looking around and wondering if you need a new place to live.
For many seniors in Oregon, moving out of that old house is a great idea. You can move somewhere more in line with your lifestyle, and you can lower your costs by moving into a cheaper home.
Getting Your House Sold
Before you can move into a new place, you have to sell your old one. After all, it’s hard to juggle two mortgages when you’re living on retirement income. To help your home sell faster and for more money, there are some changes you’ll have to make.
Greg Geilman, of the Domo Group, explains that you have to upgrade your older decor. While homebuyers will look for amenities like extra rooms and a great location, it’s the design inside that gets them excited enough to buy. Add new paint to the walls, restore any worn flooring, and either upgrade or remove any worn furniture. You’ll also want to remove family photos so guests can see the place as being their home, not yours.
However, don’t try to do everything all at once. Even if you’re a senior who exercises and eat well, your body still cannot handle what it could when you were in younger. It can also be stressful to tackle too much at once. Instead, modernize your home room by room over time.
Housing Options For Seniors
You’ve upgraded your home’s decor, and you’re getting some interest in your house. While that’s great, where are you going to move into? That depends on your needs.
Since your kids are likely gone, you probably want to downsize your home. This is when you purchase a smaller and cheaper home compared to the one you’re living in now. If you own your old house, then you can pocket the difference and have a nice nest egg. If you’re still paying a mortgage, then at least your monthly payments can be much lower. Don’t just look for the traditional single-family home. Condominiums, townhouses, even renting apartments can all work for downsizing.
What if you have some medical or mobility needs? A Place For Mom shows there are many housing options available to seniors who might need a little help. Assisted living facilities, nursing homes, and independent living communities can all offer you a great place to live while making sure your golden years are comfortable.
Moving Day Advice
You’ve sold your place and found a great home to move into. Congratulations! Now, it’s time to pack up your belongings. You also have to get them to your new place, which is why you should consider hiring movers. Although you can do much of the moving yourself, professional movers have the right mix of experience, training, and strength. Besides, they’re insured against breaking any of your possessions.
You can visit Hire-A-Helper to get quotes from several reputable moving companies with reviews from real customers. This way, you can find a company that makes you feel relaxed and confident. The busiest days for moving in the Stanton, OR area are the 3rd, 20th, and 24th each month. By avoiding these days, you can help your move go more easily.
Start Looking Today
There are a lot of good reasons for seniors to move. You can help make this process go smoothly by updating your decor, finding the right home for your needs, and hiring professional movers here in Oregon. Making the move can end up saving you money, but it can also give you a home you truly love.
